What to do with Michael Redd?

Michael Redd has $18.3 Million reasons to sit out the upcoming 2010-2011 NBA season.  The Bucks have completely moved with a filled out roster.  Redd isn’t expected back until February, but where would he fit in?  Unless a serious injury happens to John Salmons, Carlos Delfino, or Chris Douglas-Roberts there’s no reason at this point to have Redd play.  Redd used to be the face of the franchise and the big cheese in the locker room.  That mantle now belongs to Brandon Jennings and Andrew Bogut.  One school of thought was that GM John Hammond would pair one of his young forwards with Redd to bring back something that could help this year in return.  When you look at the Bucks roster, depth isn’t a problem.  The Bucks should just sit on Redd this year and reap the benefits of salary relief.  His deal could be a valuable trade chip at the deadline to add a missing piece.  There’s nothing worth that salary relief that’s available at this point of the offseason.

Earl Boykins signs with Bucks

When the Bucks signed Keyon Dooling to be a backup point guard for Brandon Jennings his skill set wasn’t exactly what I was looking for.  A veteran ball handling point guard that is a terrific free throw shooter is what I desired.  Enter Earl Boykins into the fray on a 1-year deal.  Boykins has played all over the NBA because he’s a solid veteran role player.  The ability to run the pick-and-roll with the second unit is valuable.  End game situations are where Boykins value comes to the forefront with his ball handling ability and free throw shooting.  Salting away close games is where a player like Boykins will be able to show his value.  Career averages of 1.2 turnovers per contest and 88% from the charity stripe present why he was signed.

Pacers slam revolving door at point guard

The blockbuster 4-team trade involving the Pacers, Nets, Hornets, and Rockets will have a resounding effect across the NBA.  Each team had a motive for the transaction; however in this piece I’ll touch on how it impacts the Pacers.  Indiana has been quiet for much of this offseason, but acquired their point guard for the next decade in Darren Collison along with an athletic perimeter defender James Posey.  The Pacers gave away Troy Murphy’s big contract.  I’m glad to see Murphy leaving because he regularly gave the Bucks fits with his ability to rebound and shoot from the perimeter.

Should Bucks Acquire a Veteran Center?

When you look at the 2010-2011 Milwaukee Bucks roster as it’s currently constructed you can see how the rotations may set up.  Your starting lineup is Brandon Jennings, John Salmons, Corey Maggette, Drew Gooden, and Andrew Bogut.  Carlos Delfino, Chris Douglas-Roberts, Keyon Dooling, Ersan Ilyasova, and Luc Mbah a Moute are your bench.  How much Larry Sanders, Tiny Gallon, Darington Hobson, and Jon Brockman break into the lineup remains to be seen.  Who is your backup center out of this collection of players?  Drew Gooden, Tiny Gallon, and Jon Brockman are guys that could see minutes in the post if something were to happen to Andrew Bogut.  2nd round pick Jerome Jordan from Tulsa is a player I was interested in seeing, but was moved to the Knicks.  If something were to happen to Bogut, is a legitimate post player on the roster?

Alexander looking for work

Joe Alexander was the 8th overall pick by the Bucks in the 2008 NBA draft and is currently looking for work.  Before the 2009-2010 season the Bucks decided against picking up his 3rd year option and he was later traded along with Hakim Warrick to the Bulls for John Salmons and draft choices.  In 67 NBA games during 2 years, Alexander looked completely lost.  His basketball IQ was highly questionable.  The West Virginia product didn’t do himself any favors in the D-League or in the Summer League with the Bulls.

Is this the End?

Some big name players that are reaching the end of the line are having a difficult time finding employment.  Shaquille O’Neal, Tracy McGrady, and Allen Iverson have combined for 33 All-Star selections yet remain unemployed.  The Bucks did a lot of their spending early in the free agent process.  The Michael Redd money prohibits them from being able to make another big move.  If Milwaukee had the money would any of these players fit with the Bucks?

Minnesota trades Sessions to Cavs

Luke Ridnour’s signing with Minnesota signaled an end to Ramon Sessions time with the team.  Sessions, Ryan Hollins, and a future 2nd round pick have been traded from the Timberwolves to the Cavs for Delonte West and Sebastian Telfair.  As a member of the Bucks in 2008 Sessions had a 24 assist game against the Bulls.  He received extended playing time in 2008-2009, but was unable to secure a future with the team.  Many fans were angered when Sessions was allowed to sign with the Timberwolves.  The Bucks knew Sessions wasn’t as good of a player as Brandon Jennings or Luke Ridnour.  Minnesota figured out that Ridnour is a better player than Sessions as well.  Last year with the Wolves, he played in all 82 games with just 1 start.  The Nevada product has the ability to dribble penetrate and set up teammates are his best assets.  Perimeter shooting and defensive liabilities keep him for being a starting NBA point guard.  Cleveland is going to give Sessions the opportunity to prove people wrong.

Krystkowiak to coach with Nets

Former Bucks player and head coach Larry Krystkowiak has been named to Avery Johnson’s coaching staff in New Jersey.  Krystkowiak coaching tenure with the Bucks was disastrous.  After Terry Stotts was fired, Krystkowiak took over during the 2006-2007 season and led the Bucks to a 5-13 record.  2007-2008 saw a 24-45 record and he was shown the door.  Two successful seasons in college at his alma mater Montana helped Krystkowiak get a job with Milwaukee.  In 2006, his Grizzles upset Nevada in the first-round of the tournament.  Kryskowiak was overmatched to be a head coach with the Bucks.  I’m glad to see he’s going to get chance to polish his resume with the Nets.

Bucks add depth with Brockman

Add another forward to the fold, as the Bucks have acquired Jon Brockman from the Sacramento Kings for forward Darnell Jackson and a 2011 second round pick.  Brockman played under former Buck Lorenzo Romar at the University of Washington.  He’s the Huskies all-time leader in rebounds.  At 6’7” 252 Brockman is a guy that bangs around inside.  His best game last season with the Kings was in a 112-109 loss to the Nuggets.  Brockman had a double-double 11 points 11 boards.  Jackson played in just 2 Summer League games for the Bucks so this move doesn’t surprise me.

Bucks come to terms with Dooling

With Luke Ridnour’s departure to the Timberwolves, the Bucks have an opening on the roster for a backup point guard.  Ridnour’s ability to provide perimeter scoring and terrific free throw shooting was valuable to the Bucks.  Brandon Jennings role on the team is cemented so the backup point guard isn’t going to get a ton of minutes.  This player would be valuable in late game situations where an extra ball handler/free throw shooter is needed.  The signing of Keyon Dooling to add another former Net to the fold isn’t what I was expecting.
